To experience life and to win at life. Let your humanity be a guiding light in their time of darkness . This is you time to help.
As we all know, unfortunately, there is an emerging kidney disease called Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology (CKDu) in several provinces in Sri Lanka, especially including the North Central Province, making the lives of poor people in those areas at risk of facing death. In those areas, CKDu has thus become a major public health problem causing devastating socioeconomic and health impacts. So many researches have been done to find out the root cause of this disease condition. Among those attempts, most researchers suggest that the cause for CKDu is drinking of polluted water from water sources in those areas with a comparatively high hardness.[2],[3] So, the main culprit for CKDu is polluted drinking water in those areas.
Having the scope of prevention and eradication of this disease condition in those targeted areas, Shraddha TV has implemented a most appealing project called ‘Pivithuru Pan Pooja (pure water for all)’ to provide purified water to the people in those affected areas.
This project is a joint effort of Shraddha TV and Sri Lanka Civil Security Department, Biochemistry Unit – the University of Kelaniya and Mahamevnawa Meditation Monastery.
In this project, Water Purification Plants with Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology are established in disease prevalent areas which have the ability to remove harmful heavy elements in water. Further information about the activities and expenditures of the project can be found in the section called ‘Procedures/Scope of Work’.
Based on data gained from responsible institutions like MOH Offices, hospitals, Regional Health Service Offices, Regional Secretary Offices etc, large RO Water Purification Plants will be established in areas that are highly affected by CKDu and having fewer sources of pure drinking water. These Water Purification Plants will be placed nearby the chosen wells that contain a favorable volume of water throughout the year.
The Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water Filtration Technology is determined to utilize here in order to remove all harmful elements in water such as Arsenic, Cadmium, Florid, Mercury and hardness which are suspected to be the root causes of CKDu. Thereby will be filtered and turn into pure water that is safe to drink and which can be distributed among villagers.
First, water samples from the selected location are taken and tested in laboratories at the Department of Chemistry-University of Kelaniya and Jinasena private company. Then Jinasena Company designs the RO Water Purification Plant and sends the report of treated water with a sample, estimated maintenance cost of the filter and the estimate of installation of the RO Water Purification Plant. That treated water sample is tested at the laboratory in Department of Chemistry-University of Kelaniya for the final recommendation. If the quality of the treated water is satisfactory, the purification unit will be accepted. Otherwise, modifications for the RO Water Purification Plant are suggested for the expected quality of water.
While confirming the order for the RO Water Purification Plant, construction of the filter plant room will be commenced. A sketch of the building is sent by an architect to design the plan of the filter plant room. Then this plan is sent to a quantity surveyor to estimate requiring quantities of building materials. After receiving the quantity surveyor’s report quotations for listed building materials are taken from suppliers in the vicinity of the construction. After selecting the suppliers, building materials are ordered and the Civil Security Department of the area provides man-power for constructions of the filter plant room.
After completing the construction of the filter plant room, Jinasena private company is asked to install the Water Purification Plant. Following installation of the RO Water Purification Plant, pure water is served to people.
